The capital gap

Blended finance structures
Blended finance is the deliberate combination of concessional and commercial capital designed to make otherwise-unbankable projects viable. In LATAM renewables, three structures dominate: (1) subordinated DFI tranches that thicken the equity cushion for senior lenders, improving senior pricing by 80–120 bps; (2) first-loss guarantees from GCF or CIF that transform sub-investment-grade country risk into bankable transactions; and (3) grant-funded technical assistance that de-risks development-stage cost — feasibility, ESIA, and lender due diligence — freeing sponsor capital for construction.
